US Air Force Air Commando Weather Paratroopers - The Original "Grey Berets"
Activated in January of 1963 in support of the 1st Air Commando Wing, Grey Beret weather observers and forecasters took part in several activities during the 1960s and 1970s, including and especially operations associated with the "Secret War" in Laos.
Under the superior leadership of then-Captain Keith Grimes, the first men assigned to the Commando Combat Weather Team paved the way for the Grey Berets who followed them, by participating in operations like:
- Training exercises working alongside the US Army Special Forces, during which they developed working relationships with long-range benefits
- Operation POWER PACK in the Dominican Republic, where they set up weather nets in support of Special Operations and aviation activities
- Tactical, survival and cultural training - Including military parachuting, jumpmaster and rigger certification
And the jewel in the crown of their activities during this period:
Laos
It was during this time that Captain Grimes came in to work one day with a box full of Grey Berets and told the Team to "put 'em on" and start wearing them - Even though they we not officially authorized at this point.
The work during this time was legendary, and the high point was when then-Major Grimes was selected to be the Weather Planner and Air Force Liaison to the Ground Forces commander for the Son Tay Raid.
Fortunately we have been able to capture some of their stories, and we're happy to share those stories here for all to see.
